| Poet, playwright, editor and author, Stephen Gray, was born in Cape Town. He attended the Universities of Cape Town and Cambridge, England, completing a Masters degree in Creative Writing at the University of Iowa in the United States. Now retired from his position as an English professor at the University of Johannesburg, he has published several novels of poetry, the latest of these being Shelley Cinema (2006). Currently, he works as a Series Editor for Penguin Modern Classics – South Africa.Recurrent themes in his oeuvre include attitudes to homosexuality and the many rewritings of history in South Africa. He has also written for the stage and edited collections of work by Athol Fugard and Herman Charles Bosman.In 2007, he was honoured with a SALA Literary Lifetime Achievement Award.
