Ashraf Kagee was born in Cape Town grew up in District Six and Wynberg. He attended the University of Cape Town and then did his graduate studies in psychology in the United States. He is professor of psychology at Stellenbosch University where he works as a lecturer and researcher. He and his wife, Sadiyya, live in Cape Town with their two children, Nuriyya and Ismael. Ashraf’s political awakening came in the 1980s when he, along with many other students, took part in protests and demonstrations against apartheid. He is also a fan of rock and roll of the 1950s and classic rock of the 1960s. At present Ashraf’s work as a social science researcher keeps him busy. He tries not to travel too much for his work, preferring to spend time with his family.
