 Danie Marais was born in Kimberley on May 30, 1971. He completed school in 1989 at the Menlopark High School and in 1993 he completed a B. Com. Degree with law subjects at the University of Stellenbosch. He studied teaching at the Carl von Ossietzky Universität in Oldenburg, Germany, where he majored in German, mathematics and philosophy. In 2002, after nine years abroad, he returned to South Africa. His first volume of Poetry, In die buitenste ruimte, was published in 2006 and consequently received the Eugène Marais, Ingrid Jonker and UJ Debut Prizes. In 2007 he was invited to the Poetry International Festival in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. He also participated in Poetry Africa in Durban in 2007. Al is die maan ’n misverstand (2009) was published by Tafelberg. Marais is currently a freelance journalist in Cape Town.
