The wRite associates Books, Reading and Libraries Project
The wRite associates through its Community Programme, has to date established two Reading and Book Clubs, “ the Miriam Tlali Reading & Book Club and the Tsebe Reading & Book Club” and the Tsebe Community Library . This programme focuses on eradicating illiteracy while it encourages appreciation of books, reading, writing and recognition of our South African Authors and languages, especially indigenous languages. This is done through the establishment of Reading and Book Clubs and Community Libraries in the country. This programme forms part of the South African Literary Awards Legacy programmes.
The Miriam Tlali Reading & Book Club is named after the veteran author and activist, Ms Miriam Masoli Tlali, who is a recipient of the 2005 Lifetime Achievement Literary Award. It was established in her honour in June 2009 in order to profile, promote and explore the literary jewels that South Africa is in possession of.
The Tsebe Reading & Book Club is named after a small rural village called Ga-Tsebe in Tshwane. It was established in July 2011 as the wRite associates’ contribution to the Nelson Mandela International Day activities. The CEO of the National Library of South Africa, Mr. John Tsebe, graced the opening ceremony and pledged his support.
The Tsebe Community Library is the first library to be established by the wRite associates and was launched on the 24th November 2012 at Ga-Tsebe village. The library and the Tsebe Reading & Book Club are hosted at number 417E Ga-Tsebe, next to Morula Sun.
