Africa Century International African Writers Conference and the South African Literary Awards.

Both the occasion of the South African Literary Awards and the hosting of the Africa Century International African Writers’ Conference are of major significance to the peoples of Africa.

These events offer us an opportunity to reflect on our nation state and on the contribution made by writers across the African Continent and the Diaspora, in advancing the development of our Continent.

The South African Literary Awards, to which we are a proud partner, play a pivotal role in encouraging the culture of reading and writing”, Minister of Arts and Culture, Mr Paul Mashatile.

Founded by the wRite associates, in partnership with the national Department of Arts and Culture, supported by the SABC, the inaugural annual Africa Century International Writers Conference was hosted by the University of the Free State in 2012.

This historic gathering of literary intellectuals and authors from across the world, will, as the then-OAU’s Conference of African Ministers of Education and Culture (meeting in Coutonou, Benin, in 1991) resolved, “…afford the African people a moment of pause within which to reflect on the contribution of African Writers to the development of the Continent”.

The programme activities include literary seminars, discussions, writing workshops, lectures, storytelling, readings, puppetry, poetry performances, book reviews, book exhibitions, literary music concert and the South African Literary Awards gala ceremony.
